The Process of Injection Molding.


Injection molding is the process of forcing molten plastic into a mold cavity. The heated, liquid plastic is placed into a pressurized chamber and then injected under high pressure into a steel or aluminum (depending on the desired final material) mold. There are two types of injection processes: melt pressure and vacuum pressure.

1)Melt Pressure – This technique involves injecting hot, liquefied plastic through an aperture onto a cold runner system where it is cooled and solidified.

2)Vacuum Pressure – Vacuum-assisted injection molding employs suction to pull the molten plastic into the mold, thereby reducing its viscosity so that it can be easily pushed into cavities within the mold. The pressures involved with this type of injection molding can be several thousand pounds per square inch to push large quantities of polymer all at once.

The Types of Molds.


Some of the various types of molds that are popular among plastic injection mold manufacturers include:

1) Closed-die – these have a stationary cavity and are used to create multiple parts.

2) Open-die – these have a stationary cavity and are used to create one part at a time.

3) Close-cavity – these have a movable cavity and are used to create multiple parts.

4) Single-cavity – these have a movable cavity and are used to create one part at a time.

5) Insert molding – these molds feature an insert with an opening for adding filling material which is then pushed out by injected molten plastic.

6) Blow molding – this type of mold is often pressurized so as to provide insulation while being heated, cooled, or both, so as to achieve desired final shape.

The Materials Used.


Manufacturers of plastic injection molds use a variety of materials to create the molds. The most common types of plastics used for injection molding are polypropylene and polyethylene, but other materials such as nylon, PTFE, acrylic and PVC are also used on occasion. These are all thermoplastics and can be heated or cooled to shape them into a desired final product. Once they have been shaped, these plastics need to be cooled before being injected with molten metal or hot liquid plastic. Heating them again can cause warping and distortion that would ruin the final product.

Manufacturing overseas can be an attractive option for entrepreneurs. It is cheaper, you get to skip all the red tape that comes with importing products into the United States and you are able to keep your production closer to where the demand is. However, it is not without its drawbacks.  don’t overlook these potential challenges before making a decision on whether or not outsourcing is right for you. For example, there are certain quality control issues when manufacturing in another country. On top of this, they might not have the capacity to manufacture what you want them to make. For instance, if you want them to produce 10,000 units of something every month but they only have capacity for 5,000 units per month, you won’t be able to reach your goal! So make sure you take time during negotiations with any potential manufacturers so that you know upfront what their limitations are.
